The Department of Post Graduate Studies in Commerce was established in the University during the academic year 1960-61. However, Commerce as a discipline at the undergraduate level was being offered for decades earlier to that. It is interesting to note that when the University was established in 1916 Commerce subject was offered as one of the areas of studies at the undergraduate level for a couple of years and withdrawn subsequently due to the introduction of other professional courses such as Engineering.
Ramnarayan Chellaram College at Bangalore was known for commerce education during the 1940s and it was only during 1950's that D.Banumaiah~s College of Commerce was established at Mysore. Commerce education got phillip during 1960's and 70's with the starting of several other commerce colleges and introduction of commerce discipline in the Science and Arts colleges as well.
