Department of Studies in Biochemistry

The Department of Studies in Biochemistry came into existence in 1974. Establishing an independent department was the dream of its founder Prof. T.R. Ramaiah. From the very start training Ph.D and Master Degree students has been the major thrust of the Department. The current choice based credit system (CBCS) teaching program is designed to give the students awareness on a wide variety of subjects in core biochemistry. Consequently, many a student successfully completed national level examination like CSIR/UGC/ICMR and GATE. The Department has so far produced more than 1000 M.Sc. students and over 100 Ph.D’s. The excellent training given to students has helped them to be placed in national /international research labs, pharmaceutical, medical and dental fields, teaching faculties at under graduate and post graduate colleges in the country and abroad. The department was recognized centre for the analysis of confiscated venom samples from the Forest and police departments of Karnataka state.

The Department at present has 20 research scholars pursuing Ph.D. The research work in the Department has resulted in more than 350 publications in peer reviews national and international journals. The Department has received funding from DST, DBT, CSIR, ICMR, UGC, IOE, FIST, and Lady Tata Memorial trust. Recently, the Vision Group in science and Technology (VGST), Govt. Karnataka granted a sum of Rs.40 lakhs to the Department to establish a Molecular Biology laboratory. In 2012, Dr. Med. H.C. Erwin Braun foundation, Basel, Switzerland donated equipment worth Rs. 1.5 crores to the Department to help demonstrate the effects of water filtered infrared rays on fission yeast. Several visiting faculty members from other Universities of India and abroad have been voluntarily assisting the Department in its academic and research activities for the past several years. Research activities of the Department revolve around dissecting molecular mechanisms of pro-inflammation versus anti-inflammation and novel therapeutics against venom poisoning from Indian medicinal plants.

With rapid developments in Science and Technology, the Department has also expanded its horizons by introducing a new course in Molecular Biology from the year 2015.
