ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Studies in Environmental Science was established in the year 1992 under the stewardship of Prof. P. Venkataramaiah, at the Department of Studies in Physics. The Department was subsequently headed by the coordinators Prof. J. Shashidhara Prasad and Prof. Nagappa, later Prof. P. Venkataramaiah and Prof. J. Shashidhar Prasad became Vice-chancellors of Kuvempu University and University of Mysore respectively. Later, in the year 1999 Prof. S. L. Belagali and Prof. A. G. Devi Prasad were appointed as coordinators. In the year 2012, the department got independent status and Prof. S. L. Belagali became the first Chairman of the department and served for 03 terms. Then Dr. A. G. Devi Prasad became the chairman for 02 terms. Presently, Prof. N. S. Raju is the Chairman of department.

NATIONAL STATUS

The faculties have undertaken several individual and collaborative research projects with regional, national and international importance, from various funding agencies like Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Bio-Technology (DBT), Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), University Grants Commission (UGC), Philips, Institute of Excellence (IOE-MHRD), EMPRI. The department is encouraging interdisciplinary research work with national research institutes such as CFTRI, KSPCB, and sister departments of the University. The department will also offer offering free consultation services to the public as well as industries regarding Environment related issues such as EIA of developmental projects, assessment of water quality, wasteland development and Conservation of Biodiversity.

MISSION AND VISION

The mission of the Department of Environmental Science is to undertake quality research and institutions in providing insight on the interactions between different forms of life. These insights allow us to understand natural changes in the environment, challenges in supplies of natural resources, protection of environment and to monitor and predict the impacts of pollution. Our vision is to coordinate strategically oriented group that contributes in developing environmentally sustainable responses to current environmental issues and problems through practice - based training, integrated and focused research program to ensure expertise and technical knowledge to students, researchers and common man.

COURSES

M. Sc. DEGREE

Duration: 2 years

About the course: The program is of semester scheme, involves four semesters. As the course is multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary, teaching mainly focuses on various subjects. A study-tour to different industries and treatment plants for practical understanding of the subject is mandatory every semester. Along with the theory and practical classes, a project work is mandatory in the fourth semester, which is under the supervision of Faculty members helping the students for their career in future.

Eligibility: Any science graduate from any national and international recognized university is eligible to apply.

Ph. D. PROGRAM

Duration: 3 -7 years

About the course: The Department offers Ph. D program that prepares promising students in the various disciplines of Environmental Science. A six months course work is mandatory for registration. Periodic assessment of the candidate and his/her research work will be carried out based on the quality of research publications in peer reviewed journals.

Eligibility: Candidates with M. Sc Degree in Environmental Science and allied subjects from any national and international recognized University are eligible to apply. Selection is based on the entrance exam conducted by the University followed by an interview.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND INSTRUMENTS

The Department is comparatively new and is still developing with limited research facilities. A separate block with spacious research laboratories have been set-up in the year 2012. The facilities in the Department include: Wi-Fi connection, Seminar halls with advanced projector system, Instruments such as: PCR unit, Gel Electrophoresis unit, Gas Chromatography and High Speed Defreeze Centrifuge, PM 2.5, PM. 10 and respirable dust sampler, Real time PCR, Ultra probe sonicator, Nitrogen evaporator, -20oc deep freezer, Micrtome, Centrifuge (10,000rpm), Electrophoresis unit, Double distillation unit, UV and visible spectrophotometer, Vortex (100 capacity), BOD incubator, Gradient thermal cyclers, Microscope, Epi-fluorescence, phase contrast, stero binocular with digital imaging, Inverted Trinocular and fluorescence with CCD Camera, etc.,
